The New York Yankees have been struggling lately. They led the American League East by 6 1/2 games in the month of June, only to watch that turn into a 3 1/2-game deficit thanks to a six-game losing streak.
The Yankees have some pressing needs, particularly with their starting rotation. Clarke Schmidt is now out for the rest of 2025 due to Tommy John surgery.
A frontline starter certainly wouldn't hurt to have. There will be plenty of options available.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report listed a few high-priced arms the Yankees could target, and among them was former Cy Young Sandy Alcantara.
"As far as top prospects go, the Yankees don't have a ton to offer. But even though they're already on track to pay a hefty luxury tax bill, money should be no object for them and they could go get a pricy-for-multiple-years guy like Sandy Alcantara, Mitch Keller or—should the Cardinals continue to falter and embrace a fire sale—Sonny Gray," Miller wrote.

Alcantara is not having a successful season with the Miami Marlins. He is 4-8 with a 7.01 ERA in 17 starts.
The two-time All-Star and former Cy Young winner is still working his way back to full strength from Tommy John surgery that caused him to miss all of 2024. His struggles may be hurting his value.
However, if he does get traded, the Yankees could be a good fit. Pitching for a contending team might also help him rediscover his old form in the second half of the season.
The Yankees may not have to give up too much due to Alcantara's struggles, and they could still land an elite arm to boost their rotation.
This could especially help with Gerrit Cole out for the season. We'll see how the Yankees approach the deadline.
