Joe Torre is coming out of retirement – at least for one game.
Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that the legendary New York Yankees manager will serve as an honorary coach for the 2025 All-Star Game.
Torre joins the American League coaching staff, led by current Yankees manager Aaron Boone. It’s a full-circle moment for Torre as he gets to coach alongside one of his former players.
Torre made the All-Star Game nine times and won the 1971 NL MVP award as a player, but he ended up in the Baseball Hall of Fame because of his phenomenal run as Yankees manager.
When the Yankees hired Torre in 1996, the move initially received backlash because of his lackluster resume with the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, and St. Louis Cardinals. Torre heard the critics and quickly silenced them by winning the World Series four times in his first five years.
The two-time AL Manager of the Year coached some all-time great players like Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera during his time in the Bronx, and now he’ll get to coach current-day Yankee stars at the All-Star Game.

The first round of fan voting was released on Monday, and the results suggest the Yankees will have plenty of representation at Truist Park in Atlanta.
Aaron Judge has the most votes of any player in baseball, while Paul Goldschmidt leads all first basemen, and Ben Rice is second among designated hitters.
Torre has not coached since 2010, so seeing the 84-year-old return to the dugout on July 15 will be a special moment.
