As the New York Yankees continue to struggle on offense, a former player, who led the league in home runs in 2020, is moving overseas. The Bronx Bombers have now lost three out of their past eleven games.
This slump is largely due to the Yankees’ greatest strength turning into a weakness, which is jarring considering this team's historic offense start. New York lost 6-1 to the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, dropping this group to 45-33 overall and just two games up on the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.
Meanwhile, ex-first baseman Luke Voit is beginning a new journey in his baseball career. The 34-year-old arrived in Japan after signing with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in early June. Voit, who played three and a half seasons in the Bronx, just gave his first statement about his new team and is clearly fired up about this opportunity.
"I'm very excited to finally be in Japan. I can't wait to get on ground at Rakuten Mobile Park Miyagi and run around," Voit said upon his arrival.
Coincidentally, the Yankees could use some more sure-handed bats from their infield. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt has been the only stable presence from this unit, while the likes of Jazz Chisholm Jr., Anthony Volpe, and DJ LeMahieu continue their uneven seasons.
There’s likely no return to the Bronx in sight for Voit, but the Yankees will need to make some moves at the trade deadline should they want to realistically contend for the pennant again.
