The New York Yankees could use an upgrade in their infield at the trade deadline. Their recent slump has only highlighted their weaknesses offensively even more.
The Yankees have lost six straight and have scored just two runs in the last four games combined. DJ LeMahieu has seen the majority of the work at second base. However, he is not a great defender at this point and is slashing .244/.33/.341. Aaron Judge's bat has carried the Yankees at times this year, but it's clear now that they could use another star.
ClutchPoints' Zachary Howell proposed this trade that would bring Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Yankees:
- Yankees receive: Eugenio Suárez
- Diamondbacks receive: Paul Goldschmidt and Cam Schlitter (Yankees' No. 10 prospect)
Trading Goldschmidt would be an absolute shock. However, he is already part of a rotation that will keep him out of the lineup more, now that Giancarlo Stanton is back and Ben Rice needs to play regularly as well. Goldschmidt will still play a ton, but the reality is that Ben Rice is the team's future at first base and Goldschmidt is a free agent at the end of the year.

Suárez signed a $66 million deal in 2018. He is playing on a $15 million club option this season. He could be traded if the Diamondbacks decided they do not have a realistic shot at the postseason.
Trading Goldschmidt for Suárez would make Rice the everyday first baseman, Stanton the everyday designated hitter, move Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base, where he is a better defender, and add a slugging third baseman to the everyday lineup. Suárez has just a .230 average in 73 games this year. However, he has hit 21 home runs, collected 58 RBIs and has a .825 OPS.
"Despite the potential downsides to the deal, New York should consider what it allows them to do," wrote Howell. "Boone could play Rice and Stanton without sacrificing much of anything in the field."
Suárez has hit 297 career home runs and has been named an All-Star in his career. He could be a huge boost for the Yankees, even if it means parting with Goldschmidt.
