It's now been reported that New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe is dealing with a labrum injury. Labrum injuries are typically some of the toughest to come back from in Major League Baseball, with many even calling it a death sentence for players who have it on their throwing shoulder.
Fortunately, reports have indicated that Volpe is dealing with a left labrum injury, which shouldn’t impact his throwing much.
However, it could be impacting his offensive game, which has been clear for much of the year. While Volpe has never been an elite hitter by any means, he's been a lot better in the past than he's been this season.
Anthony Volpe struggles shock Yankees manager
According to skipper Aaron Boone, he's a bit surprised about how poorly Volpe has played at times.
When speaking with The Athletic, Boone said that he's worked very hard, and in some parts, he's been one of the Yankees' top performers. For him to now be hitting .206 with 140 strikeouts in 501 at-bats is a change.
“Yeah, I am,” Boone said. “The peaks and valleys have been there. They’ve been there every year. That’s what he’s worked really hard at. We’re working really hard to try and close those gaps a little bit so there is more consistency there on the offensive side of the ball. Again, last year, in the biggest moment, he was one of our best performers in the postseason offensively. We know it’s in there, but the consistency hasn’t been there yet.”

As the Yankees have shown over the past few days, they're willing to move Volpe out of the lineup if they have to for Jose Caballero.
It'll be interesting to see if Boone continues to do that throughout the remainder of the campaign.
