The New York Yankees completed another dramatic comeback last night against the Toronto Blue Jays, earning their third straight win in an elimination game — keeping their postseason hopes alive. Catcher Austin Wells played a key role, going 2-for-4 with an RBI in the victory. Thus far in the Division Series, Wells has produced, going 3-for-9.
But even in the middle of a deep playoff run, Wells has found himself in headlines for another reason. According to Diario Libre’s Daniel Santana, Wells is being recruited by former major league slugger Nelson Cruz, who now manages the Dominican Republic national team, to represent the country in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Although Wells was raised in the United States, his mother is of Dominican descent, making him eligible to play for the Dominican Republic. With competition at catcher expected to be fierce for Team USA, especially with Cal Raleigh already committed, Wells could be tempted to suit up for the Dominican squad instead.
If he were to accept, Wells would represent a significant upgrade behind the plate over Gary Sánchez, who appeared in just 29 major league games this season. He would also join a roster stacked with talent, potentially including Manny Machado, Julio Rodríguez, Ketel Marte, Willy Adames and Rafael Devers — along with current and former teammates Camilo Doval and Juan Soto.
For now, Wells’ focus remains on helping the Yankees extend their postseason run. But once the offseason arrives, the opportunity to play for the Dominican Republic could be one he seriously considers.
