Labrum injuries are among the trickiest in baseball, an unfortunate situation that the New York Yankees are dealing with in their young shortstop, Anthony Volpe.

Volpe certainly hasn't had the year he was expecting, but some of this can be attributed to his labrum injury.

While the defensive struggles don't have much of a blame considering it's his left shoulder, it's still something that's impacting him while he's swinging the bat.

Will Anthony Volpe need surgery?

Nonetheless, the Yankees have to figure things out, but it sounds like there could be a few different ways they’ll do that.

When speaking to reporters, including The Athletic, Brian Cashman said that Volpe could have offseason surgery, adding that nothing was off the table as of now.

“As of right now, no, but I wouldn’t rule it out, either,” Cashman said. “They’ll just repeat imaging at the end of the year and see where he’s at. Right now, there’s no surgery recommended. There’s not even an IL (stint) recommended. They’ll revisit everything and make decisions based on how things are and how he’s feeling at that time because, clearly, there’ll be more physical experiences when he comes back and starts playing again for us.”

From the sound of things, it looks like offseason surgery might be the better plan for Volpe.

Considering some of his struggles this year offensively, if the Yankees can pinpoint that issue with this exact reason, they should feel much more confident heading into the next few years.

Labrum injuries can take a bit of time to recover from, so it’d be uncertain when he could return, but getting it over with now instead of later would be a wise decision.
