'Best market he’s had': Yankees’ Bellinger poised for huge payday image

After the New York Yankees were eliminated from playoff contention following a 3-1 series loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, the focus has quickly shifted to the offseason — and the future of several key players.

Veterans Paul Goldschmidt, Trent Grisham, Devin Williams and Luke Weaver are all set to hit free agency. Adding to that list, Cody Bellinger has opted out of his contract, officially testing the open market once again.

After a difficult end to his tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bellinger’s market value dipped, leading him to sign a modest three-year deal with the Chicago Cubs before being traded to the Yankees. Now, after a resurgent season in New York, the former MVP is positioned for a major payday.

“This should be the best market he’s had,” one American League executive told reporters. “He was a real difference-maker for the Yankees this season.”

Indeed, Bellinger delivered his best season since 2019, posting 5.0 WAR while hitting .272 with 29 home runs, 98 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. His defensive versatility also boosted his value, as he played at least 40 games in each outfield position and saw time at first base.

Now 30, Bellinger enters free agency as one of the most attractive position players available. He’s expected to draw significant interest across the league, joining other top names such as Kyle Tucker on the free-agent market.

Whether the Yankees re-sign him — given their numerous pending free agents — remains an open question, but Bellinger’s strong rebound season ensures he will be one of the offseason’s most coveted players.
