The New York Mets are one of the top teams in Major League Baseball and will be active in the trade market ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.
One area of need for the Mets is pitching, and MLB analyst Dave Holcomb of SI proposed a three-player blockbuster deal that would see New York acquire Sandy Alcantara from the Miami Marlins to solidify the rotation.
Mets acquire:
- Sandy Alcantara
Marlins acquire:
- Jett Williams
- Nolan McLean

“While Alcantara hasn't pitched well this season, baseball analysts continue to predict the Marlins to receive a big prospect return for the right-hander if he is traded at the 2025 deadline… I proposed the Mets send two of their top five prospects to Miami,” Holcomb wrote. “With such a move, the Marlins received quality over quantity because most trade proposals for Alcantara probably contain three prospects instead of two. But with Williams and McLean, Miami would receive two players already stars at least at the Double-A level.”
Alcantara is a former NL Cy Young Award winner whom the Mets would be banking on to regain his form. The steep price would also be due to Alcantara being under club control through the 2027 season.
The right-hander would help solidify the Mets' rotation and give them a potential Game 1 starter for the playoffs. Alcantara is 4-9 with a 7.22 ERA in 18 starts this season. But, he has been better in his last seven starts as he appears to be turning a corner.
Trading their No. 1 and No. 4 prospect would be tough for the Mets. But, with New York battling for the NL East, the team needs to go all-in on trying to win a World Series.
