As the MLB season winds down, and the New York Mets are still in a postseason push, the upcoming free agent class is starting to shape up.
For the Mets, their front office has shown a strong willingness to spend in free agency if it means having a competitive team.
The impending starting pitching free agent class is deep with left-handed starters, and the Mets should consider making a move for this NL East rival starter.
Will the Mets target the Phillies' Ranger Suarez?
Ranger Suarez is having another quality campaign for the Philadelphia Phillies, and he is set to test the free agent market for the first time in his career this offseason.
The 30-year-old southpaw is 12-7 this season, with a 3.12 ERA in 153 innings. He has thrown over 150 innings in three of the last four seasons and has made himself known as a pitcher who commands the strike zone and keeps the baseball inside the yard.
For the Mets, they have had injury issues in their starting rotation all year, and need to find some stability from someone. With Suarez's track record, he's set to be one of the top starter options in the market, and the Mets could think about signing him to a four- to five-year deal with an AAV around the $20-25 million mark.
Suarez has also won 10+ games as a starter in three of the last four seasons. While Suarez isn't going to be the top option in the starter market, he would be a very good value add for the Mets, and he's familiar with the NL East in his time with the Phillies.
In fact, Suarez has spent his entire career with Philadelphia (eight seasons). He came up mainly as a bullpen option, but then transferred to the rotation in 2022 and flourished.
