After the Detroit Tigers made an underwhelming offer to Tarik Skubal, the New York Mets are among those teams that could be interested in the services of the AL Cy Young favorite.
The desired contract figures between the Tigers and Skubal are massive, reportedly almost $250 million. Given that situation, it's expected that if Detroit is not able to sign the southpaw, they are better served trading him.
According to a report by Will Sammon, New York is "one of those teams" that will be motivated and active in this scenario.
Mets expected to get involved if Tigers make Tarik Skubal available this offseason, per @WillSammon.

Skubal is under team control through the end of the 2026 season and will become a free agent after the 2026 season. The Tigers will do everything in their power to sign him to an extension, but if the two parties don't find a middle ground, there's always a chance that a big market team like the Mets or the Los Angeles Dodgers, or the New York Yankees will be interested in a potential trade.
Why Mets need Tarik Skubal?
The Mets had a lackluster season in the starting pitching front. The likes of Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga didn't look anywhere good, and it eventually hurt the franchise in the postseason race. With the offense almost sorted, the team needs to address a key weakness in their roster, and that is the need for an elite Cy Young-caliber starting pitcher. Tarik Skubal fills that hole.
Skubal is coming off another excellent season and could win his second straight Cy Young. He finished the season with a 13-6 record, posting a 2.21 ERA with 241 strikeouts and 0.89 WHIP. His Strikeouts per Nine Innings (K/9) is over 11.00.
Also, if the Mets are going to trade for him, they may have to lose a lot of draft picks. Moreover, they must be ready to go all the way and make him an offer so good that Skubal skips free agency after the 2026 season.
