The New York Mets have shown a strong willingness to spend money in free agency under the ownership of Steve Cohen. With the season not quite going according to plan, and New York barely clinging to the last Wild Card spot in the NL, expect the Mets to be aggressive again once the season concludes.
The team's options are completely open, and aside from the top priority, Pete Alonso, there is no telling what they will do and who they will sign. New York was even aggressive at the MLB trade deadline, but even that has backfired on them.
Will the Mets pursue Alex Bregman in free agency?
It is pretty obvious at this point that the Boston Red Sox's Alex Bregman will likely opt out of his three-year, $120 million deal this offseason, and the market will certainly be piping hot for the all-star third baseman.
Bregman has made it clear that he wants to return to Boston, but the Mets are a team that could sweep him off his feet with a large offer that he wouldn't be able to resist. New York has had some inconsistency at the third base position this year, and well, Bregman is likely the best third baseman on the market.
Mark Vientos has struggled with the Mets this season, and signing Bregman would be the perfect replacement option.
Bregman is hitting .272 this season with 17 home runs in 106 games, and has an OPS+ of 126. After missing a month and a half with a hamstring problem, Bregman is back to being a leader and a stable option in the Boston clubhouse.
If the MLB standings concluded today, the New York Mets would head to Los Angeles for a three-game Wild Card set with the Dodgers.
