The New York Mets on Thursday morning placed bullpen pitcher Reed Garrett on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow sprain. Garrett is most likely done for the regular season pitching out of the bullpen, but there is a chance that he could potentially be out longer than that.

Garrett last pitched on September 14 against the Texas Rangers. In that game, he pitched 0.1 innings and gave up one hit and one walk. He has been shaky out of the bullpen over the last couple of months.

New York Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza Mentions Reed Garrett May Need Tommy John Surgery

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza spoke to the media on Thursday before the 1:10 p.m. ET game against the San Diego Padres. He talked about Garrett heading to the 15-day injured list, but the manager did not rule out possible Tommy John Surgery for him. Mendoza said,

"It's hard to say, we have to wait - but it's concerning."

With him potentially missing the rest of the 2025 season, the surgery could potentially knock him out of the 2026 season as well. This would mean that Garrett would not be available to pitch until 2027.

He is already 32 years old, but he is still under team control for the next few years. During the 2025 season, Garrett has pitched in 58 games. He has pitched in 55.1 innings and given up 47 hits and 27 runs. He has also walked 26 batters and has struck out 64 batters. His WHIP was 1.32.

If Garrett does have to undergo Tommy John Surgery, it will be interesting to see how the Mets will replace him for the remainder of the season and also 2026 as well. He has had shaky numbers in 2025. By the time the 2027 season rolls around, he will already be 34 years old and hopefully he can get back to form once he returns to the mound.
