Mets-Brewers trade idea brings new starter to NY after Griffin Canning injury image

The New York Mets have hit a rough patch in the season. They have lost 13 of their last 16, and their rotation is dealing with multiple key injuries.

Griffin Canning will miss the rest of the season with a ruptured Achilles. Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea and Tylor Megill are already on the injured list. The Mets have fallen behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the division race, and may be looking for starting pitchers at the deadline. CBS Sports' R.J. Anderson tabbed the Mets as a landing spot for Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta.

"Given the expected state of the market, Peralta could be the top available starter, creating the possibility that the Brewers could leverage other clubs to net an impressive return," wrote Anderson. "I don't think a trade is a given, and truth told I'd prefer the Brewers keep Peralta and try to win a title. If you squint, though, you can see the stars coming into alignment on this one."

The Brewers are currently a postseason contender and are just two games out of the National League Central lead. However, trading Peralta, who has an $8 million club option, would align with how they have operated in the past. It would not be too different then when they traded Josh Hader in the middle of a strong season.

Peralta has a 2.90 ERA and leads the National League with eight wins. He could lead the Mets' rotation through October. However, it will not be easy to get him away from the Brewers. When the team traded Hader in 2022, the move hurt the clubhouse, and the team lost the division lead and missed the postseason.

They will not trade Peralta unless they are blown away by a package. Additionally, if he figures to be the best pitcher on the market, many other teams will be calling about him if he is truly available. The Mets have a strong farm system and could entice the Brewers to part ways with their ace.
