Mets All-Star slugger downplays 'meaningless' free agency talk image

The New York Mets are fighting to keep their postseason hopes alive as the Philadelphia Phillies have officially clinched the NL East division, and one man that is leading that charge to the playoffs is first baseman Pete Alonso, who has been enjoying another sensational season of home run hitting in Queens.

While Alonso is red-hot in the box now, many are wondering what the future holds for the "Polar Bear" after the end of the season, given that Alonso was noncommittal to the team in recent comments about his looming free agency.

However, according to the team's all-time home run leader, there's no time to think about that stuff right now.

"I've got a job to do..."

In an interview with SNY Mets, Alonso finally seemed fed up with all the chatter about where he would be in the 2026 season and didn't hold back in setting the record straight on the issue.

"For me, it's not in my mind. Even when people are asking about it, the people asking me are thinking about it more than I am, even when I'm going through it," Alonso said. "For me, it's like, all right, I've got a job to do today. I can't think about hypotheticals, or what may or may not, or what have you. I can't think of that. I don't have time! I've got to get my foot down and be ready to hit a 100 MPH fastball today."

Alonso is currently batting .270 with 37 home runs and 121 runs batted in, second to only Philadelphia's Kyle Schwarber in the latter category.
