The New York Mets collapsed as the 2025 MLB postseason approached, and missed the playoffs.
The Mets had an eight-game losing streak in September, and lost five of their final eight games to miss the playoffs by a single game.
Now, the question is whether manager Carlos Mendoza will retain his job for the 2026 season. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal broke it down on Monday morning.
Ken Rosenthal Indicates Carlos Mendoza is Safe
Rosenthal joined Foul Territory on Monday morning to discuss the 2025 MLB postseason, and spent some time addressing the Mets' manager situation.
For now, Rosenthal said it seems like Mendoza's job is safe.
"A question I'm sure a lot of Mets fans have, after their team has collapsed with a $340 million payroll, is Carlos Mendoza? From every indication, Mendoza is safe, he's not going to be held responsible for that pitching staff, that rotation in particular, collapsing," Rosenthal said. "The Mets have no plans to fire Carlos Mendoza, but I am quite certain there will be some changes with the Mets, perhaps on their coaching staff, perhaps in their mix, on the roster.

"I don't know what's going to happen there, but I would expect that it's not going to be simply something where they say, 'You know what, let's run it back next year with the same cast.' Nah, that's not happening, not when you do what the Mets did embarrass yourselves in the final four months of the season."
The Mets snuck into the playoffs as a wild card team in 2024, and went all the way to the National League Championship Series, and then signed Juan Soto this offseason.
All expectation was to make another run in 2025, and New York looked in great position to do so for a large portion of the season. However, the Mets collapse forced them out of the playoffs, and will now provide questions to answer this offseason.
