MLB insiders give major update on Twins' ability to trade Byron Buxton image

The Minnesota Twins are the team Byron Buxton said just in the summer that he wants to be with "for life."

And in some sense, Buxton is in control of that. The superstar outfielder has a no-trade clause in his contract.

But the indication in a new article by ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel is that Buxton may actually not mind waiving that no-trade clause.

"Buxton is willing to waive his no-trade clause -- and not just for Atlanta (he's a Georgia native) -- which puts the Twins in an interesting position," the duo writes. "If the paucity of frontline free agent outfielders prompts a team to make an offer for Buxton, how seriously would Minnesota take it? And if Buxton goes, does that mean the Twins would be open to dealing some of their pitching, too? The Twins are one of the most fascinating teams this winter because of the possibilities at their disposal."

Passan and McDaniel list the Twins' chances of actually trading Buxton this offseason at 35%.

They list the Braves, Mets, Tigers, Reds, Phillies and Royals as possible destinations, although it's hard to see the Twins trading Buxton within the division.

He's coming off maybe the most stable season of his MLB career, so it'd be a tough time from a sentimental standpoint to trade him. In a practical sense, it could be the best time.

"Last season, he had career highs in plate appearances (542) and WAR (5.0)," Passan and McDaniel write. "Did Buxton figure something out about his durability at age 31 or did things fall just right? The price is right, with three years of control for just over $15 million per year."

Buxton would be a huge addition for a contending team, and a tough loss for the Twins. This is a situation that will be worth watching.
