Is Aaron Ashby related to Andy? Explaining Brewers' SP connection to Padres All-Star pitcher image

It's one of those last names that just sort of lingers in the mind of a lifelong baseball fan.

Ashby.

The last name will return to prominence on Monday when Aaron Ashby takes the mound for the Milwaukee Brewers against the Chicago Cubs in the NLDS.

And yeah, that nagging feeling that it sounds familiar is accurate: Andy Ashby pitched in the majors for a long time.

Is Aaron Ashby related to Andy?

Yes, Aaron Ashby is related to Andy Ashby.

Andy is Aaron's uncle.

The right-handed Andy was a two-time All Star who pitched 14 seasons in the major leagues. He spent eight of those campaigns with the Padres, along with time with the Dodgers, Phillies, Rockies and Braves.

Andy went 98-110 in his career with a 4.12 ERA.

Aaron is in his fourth major league season. He spent most of this campaign as a reliever, making just one start, and likely won't last very long in what looks to be an opener role during the NLDS.

This season, Aaron Ashby put up a sparkling 2.16 ERA. He had 76 strikeouts in 66.2 innings pitched.

It's been a cool journey for Aaron, who was drafted out of the junior college level where he pitched at Crowder College.

And now, he's in the postseason spotlight, just like his uncle once was.
