The two-time defending World Champions just got even better.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are signing free-agent reliever Edwin Diaz, per Will Sammon. The former New York Mets closer is set to headline Dave Roberts' bullpen as a flamethrowing right-hander, after the team's bullpen was a clear weakness on its run to the 2025 World Series.
Diaz was viewed as the top reliever on the open market, and the Dodgers clearly prioritized upgrading their bullpen arms with the acquisition.

Edwin Diaz contract details
- Years: 3
- Amount: $69 million
Details of Diaz's deal with the Dodgers will be for $69 million over three years, per Jeff Passan. Diaz was the top closer on the free-agent market this season, so he commanded a significant deal — especially from one of the biggest spenders in baseball.
Diaz declined the Mets' qualifying offer heading into the current offseason, as he was previously on a five-year, $102 million contract he signed with New York in 2023. Because he opted out of that deal, he hit the open market with the potential to earn even more annually as one of MLB's top closers.
According to Sportrac, Diaz already had the highest AAV ($21.5 million) of any MLB reliever in the 2025 season, edging out the Reds' Nick Martinez at $21.05 million.
Now, Diaz is set to hold onto that title as the highest-earning reliever in baseball at $23 million annually over his three-year deal in L.A.
Diaz had been in a Mets uniform for eight years, now set to join another top NL power. New York's move to sign Devin Williams earlier in the offseason was a sign of Diaz's potential departure.

Edwin Diaz career timeline
Seattle Mariners, 2016-18
Diaz was drafted by the Mariners 98th overall pick in the third round of the 2012 MLB Draft.
He made his MLB debut in 2016, soon after breaking a Seattle record with 11 consecutive outs via strikeout. Quickly, Diaz emerged as the team's new closer.
Over the next two seasons, he was one of the best relievers in baseball, including a 1.96 ERA and 57 saves in 2018, earning an All-Star bid and being the winning pitcher in the game. He set a Mariners single-season record in saves in 2018, and he won the AL Reliever of the Year award.
New York Mets, 2019-25
In December 2018, the Mariners traded Diaz, Robinson Cano and $20 million to the New York Mets for Jay Bruce, Jarred Kelenic, Anthony Swarzak, Gerson Bautista, and Justin Dunn.
Diaz struggled in his first Mets season in 2019, but returned to excellence in the shortened 2020 campaign. He'd remain one of the best closers in baseball over the next few seasons, being named an All-Star in 2022 and earning a five-year deal in November 2022 that made him the highest-paid reliever in MLB history.
In 2023, Diaz injured his knee while celebrating in the World Baseball Classic, and he missed the entire 2023 season.
Diaz returned in 2024 and re-cemented his status as a top closer in 2025, earning his third All-Star selection. He then signed with the Dodgers in free agency after 2025.
Edwin Diaz career earnings
Per Spotrac, Diaz has made $68,997,647 in career earnings to this point, before his Dodgers deal kicks in.
