The 2025 MLB season is starting to get down to the wire with just a little under a month to go, and the Detroit Tigers are all but guaranteed to make the postseason in the 2025 season, with their 80-60 record as of now one of the best in the league, just behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the best record in the American League.
Ace Tarik Skubal has done a remarkable job in repeating his Cy Young Award campaign from last year, although the Triple Crown is in jeopardy of being repeated this year, as pitchers such as Garrett Crochet and Max Fried have been just as impressive from the bump this season.
However, there is a chance that the Tigers could be letting go of one of their key players in free agency, one that was a starter in the All-Star Game just a couple of months ago.
Gleyber Torres Expected To Sign Elsewhere in Free Agency
In December 2024, just before the year turned, infielder Gleyber Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Motor City Kitties after seven seasons in The Bronx with the New York Yankees, with whom he made two All-Star appearances with.
However, Torres has struggled since the 2025 Midsummer Classic, hitting just .231 with a .675 OPS, as opposed to the .812 OPS he boasted heading into the break, and Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly believes that Torres and the team could be parting ways after the 2025 season.
"Between Javier Báez, Colt Keith, Zach McKinstry and Matt Vierling, the Tigers will have alternatives at second base that allow them to reinvest Torres' $15 million elsewhere next season," Kelly writes.
In addition to his waning OPS, Torres has 14 home runs with 63 runs batted in with a season batting average of .263, his talent still being shown, just likely not at the rate that Detroit fans made themselves used to to begin the campaign.
