The MLB season is about to begin a new month, and the Detroit Tigers are still waiting on the return of starting pitcher Alex Cobb.
Cobb, 37, will turn 38 in October. He signed with the Tigers this past offseason on a one-year, $15 million deal, but he's yet to make his Detroit debut after discovering inflammation in both his left and right hips in Spring Training.
It's been a constant problem for Cobb, and he's only been able to start three games since his All-Star season in 2023 with the San Francisco Giants.
A.J. Hinch says that the Tigers are shutting down Alex Cobb
Alex Cobb has received multiple injections this season as he continues his recovery, but the Tigers have found success despite his absence. The veteran starter completed a minor league rehab assignment this month, but his Tigers debut will have to wait.
Tigers insider Chris McCosky updated Cobb's status on Tuesday morning, mentioning that A.J. Hinch announced that the team is pulling Cobb from his rehab assignment and is shutting him down from pitching for a week. Detroit could give him another 30-day window.
AJ Hinch, on MLB radio, said Alex Cobb was being pulled off his rehab assignment and shut down for a week. This allows the club to reset the assignment for another 30 days, but obviously a decision will have to be made before that. Time is about up.

A.J. Hinch has already mentioned in the past that if Cobb were to return to the big leagues this season, it would be at a limited capacity.
It's uncertain whether Cobb will pitch in the majors in 2025. Detroit will continue to monitor him, but it's difficult for any starter who hasn't thrown in nearly a year to make a return this late in the season.
The All-Star pitcher has been a consistent starter in his career when healthy. In 233 starts, he's tallied a 79-76 record, 3.84 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 1,108 strikeouts in 1,327.2 innings.
