Chris Paddack was acquired from the Minnesota Twins at the trade deadline just over a month ago. Since then, his role in the Detroit Tigers' pitching staff has shifted a bit. He has now moved from being a starting pitcher to having a role in the bullpen.
Tuesday's game against the New York Mets marked his first outing out of the bullpen, and it was a rough one as Paddack surrendered six earned runs in just 1.1 innings pitched. His ERA has now inflated to 5.37 on the season. However, there was some more serious news surrounding Chris Paddack following the game.
The Tigers placed Chris Paddack on the bereavement list on Wednesday
Before Wednesday's game against the Mets, Detroit announced that Chris Paddack will be sidelined for a few days, as he's dealing with a death in the family.
MLB's bereavement list allows players to miss three to seven days to mourn before another roster announcement. The corresponding move is Keider Montero joining the team for the series finale on Wednesday.
Paddack spoke to Evan Petzhold of the Detroit Free Press and said he hopes the time off can provide him a little reset, and after being with his loved ones, he will return with a different mindset.
No doubt a tough week for Paddack, who was just moved to the bullpen, and has not been productive in his tenure with the Tigers.
In 31.1 innings since being traded to Detroit, Chris Paddack has a 6.89 ERA, which includes giving up eight runs to his former team, the Twins.
Detroit will need Paddack to give them some stability down the final month stretch of the season if he hopes to be considered for any meaningful innings in the MLB playoffs.
