Before the MLB rosters expanded this week, the Philadelphia Phillies made a large list of moves involving pitchers.
Back on Aug. 26, the Phillies called up right-handed pitchers Daniel Robert and Lou Trivino from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and placed Jordan Romano on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his middle finger.
Although all of these moves took place, right-handed pitcher Joe Ross got the most unfortunate end of the stick, as the Phillies decided to move on from him and released him, Philadelphia's X page posted.
Joe Ross signs a deal with the Chicago Cubs
Ross appeared in 37 games for the Phillies this season, finishing with a 2-1 record, 5.12 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched.
However, the 32-year-old bullpen pitcher didn't sit as a free agent long, as the Chicago Cubs decided to pick him up and sign him to a minor league contract on Tuesday, according to Darragh McDonald of MLBTradeRumors.com.
The Cubs also signed Aaron Civale off of waivers before August ended, as Chicago has dealt with some unfortunate injuries to Michael Soroka (shoulder strain) and Jameson Taillon (strained groin), resulting in both players getting placed on the injured list.
Joe Ross will be a veteran pitcher for the Cubs who has experience in pitching in the postseason (1-1 record, 6.35 ERA, and 1.24 WHIP in five appearances). Although it seems that the righty signed his new deal with the Cubs on Aug. 1, which would make him ineligible for postseason action, his experience in the big leagues will be nice for Chicago.
In 160 appearances through eight seasons in the majors, Ross' career pitching statistics include a 31-35 record, 4.28 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and he has tallied 508 strikeouts in 568.1 innings.
