The Chicago Cubs have clinched their first postseason berth since the 2020 season. Despite not catching up to the Milwaukee Brewers, the Cubs will be one of the National League's Wild Card teams.
However, that does not mean the club has been performing its best as of late. They are currently in a five-game losing streak, which is less than ideal.
The team is doing its best to get back on track and turn up the momentum ahead of its postseason matchup. They have the opportunity to do so as they finish out their regular season with two games against the New York Mets and three games against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell's simple prescription for team's recent struggles
Manager Craig Counsell was asked about his team's recent struggles and what they can do to turn it around. According to The Athletic's Patrick Mooney, the Cubs skipper needs to see more out of his pitching staff.
"We got to do things better," Counsell said. "It's funny how – I always think when you say the 'energy' word, you never say: What about pitching? What's the energy about pitching? We got to pitch better. It's as simple as that. We haven't played well enough. Energy, I don't know. We haven't played well enough to win a game."
Some of the team's struggles also come with the absence of Kyle Tucker. He was back with the club on Tuesday and ran the basepaths ahead of their game against the Mets. He is hoping to return before the Wild Card.
