One day after a 3-1 victory in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series, Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell surprised many with his pitching choice for Game 2.

Counsell announced that right-hander Andrew Kittredge, typically a late-inning reliever, will make the start Wednesday against the San Diego Padres, opposing right-hander Dylan Cease. Kittredge pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the opener and has been reliable since arriving from the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline, posting a 3.32 ERA with five saves and 32 strikeouts in 23 appearances.

Despite those strong numbers, Kittredge is not expected to pitch deep into the game. Counsell’s decision is especially notable given the Cubs’ other options. The postseason roster includes starters Shota Imanaga, Collin Rea and Jameson Taillon, along with converted starters Aaron Civale, Michael Soroka and Brad Keller.

That said, the move may be matchup-driven. Kittredge faced the Padres’ Nos. 9, 1 and 2 hitters in Game 1, and Counsell could be betting on favorable results against the top of the order a second time. The Cubs may also prefer a right-handed opener against San Diego’s righty-heavy lineup, with left-hander Imanaga lined up to follow in long relief.

Imanaga, who recorded a 3.73 ERA this season, appears likely to handle the bulk of innings after Kittredge. Civale, Rea and Soroka remain available as well. Taillon, who last started Saturday against St. Louis, could be saved for a potential Game 3 if the Cubs fail to close out the series tonight.
