The trade deadline has come and gone, and the Boston Red Sox did not make the type of flashy trades that were rumored over the past couple of weeks.
After trading Rafael Devers away earlier this season, the Red Sox were expected to add at the trade deadline. In need of pitching help, Boston was in the mix for almost every top pitcher on the trade market, but ended up only acquiring Dustin May and Steven Matz.
Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow addressed the fans' frustration with Boston's lack of a flashy trade, but believes the team is talented enough to make the postseason, as transcribed by The New York Post's Mitch Fink.
“I understand the frustration and disappointment,” Breslow told reporters. “There’s not a lot of sympathy for how hard we tried to get deals across the line, I understand that."
“We believe that we have a really young, exciting, talented team, and one that is capable of continuing to perform at this level and make it to the postseason, and that’s what our focus is on.”

The Red Sox needed another starter to round out their rotation, and fans were hoping the team would add a pitcher like Joe Ryan or Mackenzie Gore to be their second-best option behind Garrett Crochet. However, they ended up with May, who is still a good addition.
Matz is having one of his best seasons of his career, and should be a good addition to the Red Sox's bullpen. Despite not making any major moves at the deadline, it appears Breslow tried to. He is correct that the team is playing at a high level and has positioned itself to compete for a playoff spot.
