The Boston Red Sox may be in the market for another starting pitcher. After being eliminated from the MLB playoffs, the Red Sox front office has several decisions to make regarding the roster.

After going after a couple of different players at the trade deadline, all Boston ended up with was Dustin May, who did not have a productive season with either the Red Sox or the Los Angeles Dodgers. Who could Boston potentially think about trading for this offseason that would immediately make its rotation better?

Twins' Joe Ryan linked to Red Sox in potential trade

In a recent predictions piece by Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer, Joe Ryan to the Red Sox is one of eight realistic offseason trade ideas:

"Trade Proposal: Boston Red Sox get RHP Joe Ryan; Minnesota Twins get INF Marcelo Mayer"

"The Red Sox went hard after Ryan at the trade deadline, but reportedly did not come close to pulling off a deal. Still, don't be surprised if they try again this winter. They stand to lose Lucas Giolito to free agency, and they'll otherwise be under a ton of pressure to build on an 89-win campaign that should only be the start of something bigger."

The Twins have said they don't want to trade Joe Ryan, but that could be a facade, considering the roster teardown they just had in July by trading away 10+ players at the deadline. If there's any time to trade Ryan, it's right now.

Ryan had a stellar all-star campaign this season. He posted a 3.42 ERA in 171 innings and 194 strikeouts.

The 29-year-old starter would likely slot into the No. 2 slot for the Red Sox if Lucas Giolito departs during free agency. It's no surprise that the trade proposal has Boston giving away Marcelo Mayer. Joe Ryan is a high-profile starter, and it might even take more than just Mayer to acquire the all-star starter.
