The Boston Red Sox placed third baseman Alex Bregman on the injured list in a tough loss for the team. As such, the Red Sox are trying to figure out what to do at the third base position.
With Bregman out for the foreseeable future, the Red Sox have used Nick Sogard and top prospect Marcelo Mayer (who is naturally a shortstop) at third base.
However, questions have swirled if Rafael Devers will go back to third base. The veteran transitioned to the designated hitter role once Bregman was signed in free agency in a highly controversial move.
So, with Bregman hurt, it could make sense to move Devers back to third, although manager Alex Cora had a strong stance and mentioned Devers will not play third base, per NESN.
"Not at third base, no," Cora responded when asked if there was a start to the process. "We keep talking about the other position, but as of now, it's not happening."
"He's not going to play third base," Cora said.
The manager was then asked about Devers potentially playing first base, although Cora didn't exactly give a straight answer. "We still talking about the situation. There's a chance Kristian (Campell) is going to play first base in Atlanta...We don't need to go to specifics, but the third base part of it, is a no."
The injury to Triston Casas sparked conversations that Devers could move to first base, but Abraham Toro, Connor Wong and Nick Sogard, among others, have been trying to fill that void with Devers remaining at DH.
So, for now, don't expect Devers tp play third base at all, although it remains to be seen if he plays first base this season.
