The Boston Red Sox are in the midst of a playoff push and should look to solidify the roster ahead of the July 31 Major League Baseball trade deadline.

An area of need for the Red Sox is pitching, as Boston could look to bolster the rotation. Ahead of the deadline, MLB insider Ari Alexander reports that the Red Sox and Chicago Cubs are two teams showing heavy interest in Miami Marlins starter Edwards Cabrera.

“Marlins RHP Edwards Cabrera is drawing interest with the Cubs and Red Sox as teams I’ve been told like the nasty righty,” Alexander wrote.

Cabrera is earning $1.95 million this season and has three more years of club control, so it likely would cost quite a bit to acquire him. But the right-hander would solidify the rotation and give Boston a great chance at earning a playoff berth.

Cabrera would join a rotation led by Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello, as Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow is happy with the rotation, but still could add to it.

“We played good baseball on both sides. I think you saw this really athletic, dynamic team,” said Breslow. “Pretty young. Run the bases well and play really good outfield defense. We’re creating a lot of pressure on the opposing team. But if you look at our rotation for the last month, Lucas Giolito and Brayan Bello have pitched really well. And Crochet has been an absolute anchor since the first pitch of the season.”

Cabrera is 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA in 17 starts this season

The Red Sox are holding onto the second Wild Card spot with a record of 57-50.
