The Atlanta Braves are entering uncharted territory this offseason as they begin the search for a new manager for the first time in a long time. With the end of the Brian Snitker era, change is coming — and replacing Snitker is the top priority. While there are other moves to be made this winter, none are bigger than finding the team’s next leader. Notably, Snitker stepped away on his own terms.
“Brian Snitker will not return as manager of the Atlanta Braves, sources tell ESPN. He informed the team of his decision yesterday. But he will remain with the organization in a senior advisory capacity,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan posted.
Now, it falls on Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos to find the right person to carry the torch. One name that continues to surface is former Chicago Cubs manager — and former Braves catcher — David Ross.
“David Ross: Managed Chicago Cubs from 2020–2023; played for the Braves from 2009–2012,” ESPN wrote.
Ross has been linked to the job ever since talk of Snitker stepping down began. He’s also expressed clear interest in returning to the dugout — particularly in Atlanta.
“David Ross, the former Atlanta catcher and Chicago Cubs manager, said Thursday that he's ready to manage again and said returning to the dugout with the Braves ‘would be amazing,’” ESPN wrote.

Ross had a solid run with the Cubs, even earning NL Manager of the Year honors. However, his time in Chicago ended abruptly when the organization replaced him with Craig Counsell.
“The Chicago Cubs fired manager David Ross and hired Craig Counsell on Monday. The longtime Milwaukee Brewers manager was lured to Chicago with a record-setting five-year, $40 million contract, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN,” Passan wrote.
Hiring Ross would mean bringing in a true player’s coach — someone familiar with Atlanta and who has postseason experience both as a player and manager. While this wouldn’t follow the Braves’ traditional model of promoting from within, Ross’s ties to the organization and leadership qualities make him a natural fit.
With a veteran-heavy roster built to win now, Ross could be the perfect choice to lead the next chapter of Braves baseball. Only time will tell — but this is one move Atlanta likely wouldn’t regret.
