Grand Slam singles and doubles wins: Coco Gauff nears historic milestone in 2022 French Open

This has been a French Open to remember for Coco Gauff. The 18-year-old tennis star has cruised through the singles field on her way to a match with world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, and earned a berth in the women's doubles finals alongside Jessica Pegula after a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over fellow Americans Madison Keys and Taylor Townsend.

On Saturday, she'll have the chance to earn her first Grand Slam singles title, and then the next day, she'll compete for her first Grand Slam doubles title.

Along with the historic company, she would share in becoming a Grand Slam winner, Gauff could further plant her name in the record books by winning the singles and doubles title in the same tournament, a feat that has only been done 11 times since 2000.

Whose company would she share? The Sporting News takes a look at the history of women's tennis players to win singles and doubles titles in the same tournament.

Grand Slam doubles winners

During the history of Grand Slam events, there have been 53 women to claim titles in the singles and doubles at the same event in the same year. The feat has been accomplished 149 different times.

However, those numbers are skewed by the amateur era, which went from 1884 until 1968, when the Open Era began, allowing professional players to compete in Grand Slam tournaments. Since the start of the Open Era, the feat has been accomplished 52 times by 16 different women. Only nine of those happened at the French Open from seven different women.

From 1978-87, Martina Navratilova accomplished the feat 14 times by herself, an all-time record. Margaret Court is second with 12 all-time double wins with seven coming in the Open Era and five in the amateur. Since Navratilova's double victory in 1987, the feat has become even more rare. Nine different women have pulled off the double win, most recently dominated in recent years by the Williams sisters.

Serena Williams and Venus Williams have combined to accomplish the feat 10 times as doubles partners, with Serena winning the singles eight times and Venus twice.

Should Gauff win both at the 2022 French Open, it would mark the second straight year someone won both the singles and doubles at the French Open after Barbora Krejcikova won the singles and the doubles with Katerina Siniakova in 2021.

Gauff could further the historic company she shares by becoming the first woman since 1978 to earn both her first Grand Slam singles and doubles win in the same tournament. Virginia Ruzici did both at the French Open. She is the only woman in the Open Era to claim her first Grand Slam wins at the same time. Only 15 women have won the two titles for their first wins at the same time, and all but four of them happened before World War II.
