Lionel Messi continues to help Argentina go from strength to strength as they live up to their current world champions tag.

La Albiceleste's victory in the 2022 World Cup has been followed up by a storming start to the qualification process for the 2026 tournament, with Argentina winning four games from four so far to sit top of the CONMEBOL table.

Now they face a Uruguay side who held Brazil earlier in the competition, and who have a 36-year-old Luis Suarez recalled and potentially ready to inspire them against his old Barcelona teammate Messi. It should be an intriguing tie between two of South America's major football forces.

The Sporting News provides the details on this match, including how to watch on TV, as well as team news and kick-off information.

Argentina vs Uruguay lineups, team news

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho didn't make the Argentina squad, which is a sign of how much strength in depth Scaloni can call upon in his squad. Lionel Messi will start in a free role, with the likes of Rodrigo de Paul and Enzo Fernandez tasked with covering the ground behind him.

  • Argentina projected lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Martinez (GK) — Montiel, Romero, Pezzella, Tagliafico — Mac Allister, Fernandes, De Paul — Messi, Alvarez, Gonzalez.

Luis Suarez is back in Marcelo Bielsa's squad, but it looks unlikely that he'll start the game, given his advancing years and the presence of Liverpool's Darwin Nunez. He could be an impact sub, with the side built around Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde and Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo.

Uruguay predicted lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Rochet (GK) — Varela, Araujo, Gimenez, Vina — Valverde, Ugarte, Bentancur — Pellistri, Nunez, De La Cruz.

Argentina vs Uruguay prediction, odds

With Argentina in excellent form, and with Messi in tow, a straightforward home win seems like the obvious bet in this one. Few international squads can compare to the one at Lionel Scaloni's disposal and they should win a fairly low-scoring affair in the Argentine capital to keep up their perfect CONMEBOL qualifying record to date.

Prediction: Argentina 2-0 Uruguay
