Could Atletico Madrid sign Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski for free next summer? image

Barcelona may be preparing to say goodbye to one of their biggest stars, and their rivals could be waiting to swoop in.

Reports from Spain suggest that Atletico Madrid are eyeing a move for Robert Lewandowski, who could be available for free next summer.

The Polish striker, now 37, joined Barcelona in 2022 to lead their attack after a glittering spell with Bayern Munich.

In just over three years, he’s scored more than a hundred goals and even picked up a Pichichi trophy along the way.

But despite those numbers, it looks like Lewandowski’s time at Camp Nou is winding down faster than anyone expected.

Barcelona reportedly do not plan to extend his contract, which expires at the end of next season, as per Sport. The club is instead focusing on rebuilding with younger forwards who fit their long-term vision.

If this all sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Atletico Madrid pulled off a similar masterstroke when they signed Luis Suarez from Barcelona in 2020 — for free.

Suarez responded in the best way possible: by firing Atleti to the La Liga title in his first season.

Now, Diego Simeone might be ready for “Suarez 2.0.” According to reports, Atletico believe Lewandowski’s experience and finishing ability could add a cutting edge to their attack — especially if the deal doesn’t cost them a transfer fee.

The tricky part, of course, would be the wages. Atletico’s finances aren’t as healthy as Barcelona’s, but the club hopes Lewandowski might prioritize competition and continuity over a massive paycheck.

Staying in Spain could also appeal to him, as he’s settled well and has no plans to move abroad.

Barcelona already looking for Lewandowski replacement

For Barcelona, letting Lewandowski go would mark the end of an era but also open the door for a new striker. Names like Julian Álvarez have already been linked as part of a younger, faster front line.

Lewandowski’s agent, Pini Zahavi, told 365Scores: “Lewandowski’s contract with Barcelona expires in the summer of 2026, and no decisions have been made yet.” That statement leaves plenty of room for speculation — and for Atletico to quietly plan their next big steal.

Whether it’s another smart move by Simeone or just transfer gossip, one thing’s for sure: if Lewandowski trades blue and red for red and white, La Liga might just have its next blockbuster storyline.
