“His heart will not be in it”: Mohammad Kaif doubts Rohit Sharma playing the 2027 ODI World Cup image

The conversation around India’s next phase in ODI cricket has only grown louder since Shubman Gill replaced Rohit Sharma as captain.

While many praised the decision as part of long-term planning, former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes it might spell the end of Rohit’s ODI journey before the 2027 World Cup.

In his latest YouTube video, Kaif shared that it could be difficult for Rohit to find the same motivation now that he’s no longer leading the side, especially after years of shaping the team’s direction.

Why does Mohammad Kaif think Rohit might not continue till 2027?

Kaif explained that captaincy changes a cricketer’s mindset completely. Once someone has been in charge- making tactical calls, guiding youngsters and leading from the front- returning to just being a player is not easy.

He said that Rohit has evolved into a true leader over the last few years, managing the team with care and experience.

The former cricketer added that Rohit’s passion for leadership may make it hard for him to stay fully engaged as only a batter.

"Now it will be match by match, series by series. The field is equal for everyone. Now, who knows how much he will even want to play? Once a player has tasted captaincy, once a player has had the experience of lifting two shining trophies in eight months, and develops a passion for it, he will not be able to focus only as an opener," said Kaif.

"His heart will not be in it. He has become a leader, a leader who manages the team, picks the team, uses players wisely like an elder brother, and makes tactical moves to change the game," he added.

Rohit’s achievements as ODI captain speak for themselves. He has 42 wins from 56 matches and the Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year. For now, Rohit remains part of the ODI squad as a senior batter.
