Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise the Indian Premier League has ever seen.

With IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020, they have truly become a powerhouse in the tournament especially under Rohit Sharma's captaincy. In fact, 2021 was the first odd-numbered year in a whole decade that Mumbai didn't celebrate an IPL triumph, with Chennai Super Kings victorious.

After Gujarat Titans' victory in 2022, Mumbai Indians will be eager to reclaim the title they feel they've made their own in recent years. Can they do it?

Here's all you need to about MI as they bid for the top honours once again.

Mumbai Indians IPL history

After five years without success, Mumbai Indians took their first ever IPL crown in 2013 with a 23-run victory over Chennai Super Kings in the final. They repeated the trick two years later by beating the same opponents by 41 runs.

Their 2017 and 2019 final victories were far more nervy affairs, as Mumbai just edged out Rising Pune Supergiant by one run in a nail-biting 2017 finale, becoming the first franchise to put three title wins next to their name. They also beat Chennai Super Kings by a single run in 2019, so it's fair to say they can hold their nerve in the big matches.

Rohit Sharma's captaincy has proven the magic bullet for Mumbai Indians: he won the title in his first year in the role in 2013 after taking over from the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, and Sharma become a pivotal figure ever since. His half-century won him the Man Of The Match award in 2015 and in the 2020 final he top-scored with a measured 68 off 51 balls to see his side home with eight deliveries to spare.

Now, with the help of coach Mark Boucher, Sharma guides a slightly new-look squad into IPL 2023. With huge stars like Cameroon Green, Jofra Archer and Suryakumar Yadav in their ranks, Mumbai Indians aren't going anywhere. They've got the weight of history behind them, as well as an exciting future.
