The upcoming ODI series between India and Australia is not just about the rivalry; it is also about history in the making.
Two of India’s biggest cricket stars, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, are on the verge of reaching major personal milestones that could add another golden chapter to their legendary careers.
The two stalwarts of Indian cricket have staged a comeback in the international arena for the first time since helping India lift the Champions Trophy 2025 title in UAE.

What big records can Virat Kohli achieve in the Australia ODI series?
Virat Kohli is once again in touching distance of a few massive records. The Indian batting maestro needs just 54 runs to overtake Kumar Sangakkara and become the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history.
Kohli currently stands at 14,181 ODI runs, while Sangakkara has 14,234. Once he crosses that mark, only Sachin Tendulkar (18,426) will be ahead of him.
When it comes to white-ball cricket (ODIs + T20Is combined), Kohli is also 67 runs short of surpassing Tendulkar’s record of 18,436 runs. The 36-year-old has already scored 18,369 runs in the shorter formats and one good knock in Australia could help him take the top spot.
Kohli, who already owns 51 ODI hundreds, continues to lead the world in terms of most centuries in the format. Another ton in this series could also help him equal Sachin Tendulkar’s record of nine ODI centuries against Australia.
What milestones are within Rohit Sharma’s reach in the Australia series?
For Rohit Sharma, the series opener in Perth will be one of the most special moments of his career. The Indian captain will play his 500th international match, becoming only the 11th cricketer in the world to reach that milestone.
Rohit also has a chance to break a huge record in the six-hitting department. He currently has 344 sixes in ODIs and needs eight more to overtake Shahid Afridi (351) as the player with the most sixes in ODI history.
He is also close to becoming the first Indian to score 1,000 ODI runs in Australia, needing just 10 more runs to reach that mark. His record against Australia in their home conditions is already superb, with 990 runs in 19 matches at an average of over 58.
Sharma, who currently has 49 international centuries, also needs just one more to reach the milestone of 50 international hundreds, making him only the third Indian after Tendulkar and Kohli to do so.
He is also just 300 runs away from completing 20,000 international runs, joining an elite list that includes Tendulkar, Kohli and Dravid.
