The rule will allow the fans in the stadium to keep any cricket ball that is hit into the stands if they can catch it. This change is introduced to make games more interesting and engaging for fans at the venue.
What is Baseball's iconic fan catch rule?
In baseball, the fans in the stadium are a big part of the game. To increase engagement, the sport follows a 'fan catch' tradition, wherein the fan who catches the ball hit into the stands by the batter gets to keep the ball as a souvenir.
The rule tends to make the crowd even more focused and concentrated on the game, making them a part of the experience.
How will the new rule in BBL and WBBL impact the fans?
A 'fan catch rule' allows any spectators in the crowd to keep the ball hit into the stands for themselves. However, it will only be applicable if it happens in the first over of either innings.
"Big Bash just got that much more fun for crowds, with the BBL and WBBL set to implement baseball’s iconic fan catch rule this summer," said a tweet by CODE Cricket
By implementing the rule, the BBL and the WBBL want to bring fans closer to the action. Every six hits during the game will now carry an extra anticipation, not just for the team's scorecard, but also for the fans who will try to grab the ball and take it home.
