An old tweet from Rohit Sharma has gone viral again after he was replaced as India’s ODI captain before the upcoming series against Australia.

The tweet, which dates back to September 2012, is now being seen in a completely new light by fans.

It reads, “End of an era (45) and the start of a new one (77).” Interestingly, Rohit’s jersey number is 45, while his successor, Shubman Gill, wears 77-  a coincidence that social media didn’t miss.

Why is Rohit Sharma’s 2012 tweet going viral now?

When Rohit Sharma posted that message 13 years ago, few would’ve imagined it would resurface with such meaning in 2025.

The timing of the tweet fits perfectly with the current situation, as Gill takes charge of India’s ODI side.

Rohit, who became India’s full-time ODI captain in 2022, has enjoyed remarkable success in the role. He led India to the 2023 World Cup final and lifted the Champions Trophy earlier this year.

But as India begins planning for the 2027 World Cup, the selectors felt it was time for a fresh start.

The 38-year-old’s tweet has sparked a wave of nostalgia among fans, many calling it “prophetic” and “heartbreaking.”

Supporters on social media are hailing him for what he’s achieved while also wishing Gill success as the next leader of Indian cricket.

What did Ajit Agarkar say about replacing Rohit Sharma as ODI captain?

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar admitted that the decision wasn’t easy, especially after Rohit’s recent achievements.

However, he said the call was made with the future in mind. “Even if he hadn’t won the Champions Trophy, it would still have been a tough decision because of how good he’s been for India,” Agarkar explained.

He added that such decisions are about timing and giving the new captain enough space to settle in before the next major ICC event.

“When you’re making that change, you want to do it early enough for the next person to grow with confidence,” he added.

As Gill prepares to lead India in the three-match ODI series in Australia starting October 19, the focus will be on how he shapes the team’s new direction.
