'Afghanistan is ready to host international matches' - Taliban leader Anas Haqqani assures cricket fans image

Anas Haqqani, a leader in Afghanistan's Taliban government, has claimed that the country are ready to host international cricket matches and are working on improving the facilities across the country.

Afghanistan have been a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) for close to a decade now and is a Test-playing nation, however, the national team has never competed on home soil.

Due to security concerns and a tumultuous political situation in the country over the last few decades, the Afghanistan national team played cricket outside the country.

Now that Afghanistan have established themselves as a strong cricketing nation, the Taliban government is planning to host international matches in their country.

'Afghanistan is ready to host international matches' - Taliban leader

In a recent podcast with Indian journalist Shubhankar Mishra, Taliban leader Haqqani claimed that the government wishes to welcome countries from across the world to visit their country and play cricket matches.

Haqqani assured of providing ample security and will also invest in building infrastructure and facilities to host international games.

The Taliban leader said: "Afghanistan is ready to host cricket. There is no problem. We will provide the necessary security. Only the matter of the stadium is a bit of a roadblock. But from our side, we want to build one or two new stadiums to host international matches so that players from all countries can come here, that's our wish."

What next for the Afghanistan cricket team?

Afghanistan are currently in UAE competing in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. They began their journey with a dominating win over Hong Kong in the curtain raiser and will next face Bangladesh on Tuesday, September 16.
