On a rough night for the Davis family in their home of Virginia, Abdullah Mason stepped up to the plate. Mason stopped Jeremia Nakathila in round five, securing himself the future of the lightweight division.
A title shot may be next for Mason (19-0), especially after Keyshawn Davis was forced to vacate the WBO lightweight title and his main event spot after missing weight by over 4.3 pounds.
It wasn’t the only controversy from Davis or his family that night.
Mason had a rocket attached to his back the moment Top Rank signed him. He controlled the distance thanks to right hands, and followed it up with some lefts. The 21-year-old then ripped shots to Nakathila’s (26-5) body by round four. Nakathila tried landing hard shots, but Mason’s defense was sharp.
It wasn’t until the start of the fifth that the referee saw enough following a barrage of punishing shots from Mason. Mason landed 51% of his power shots and nine jabs per round. He landed 75 of 146 shots (51.4%), landing over 20+ shots in the fourth and fifth rounds.
Continues to be the man to watch.

Mason saved the night after the Davis family was involved in controversy. First, Keyshawn (13-0) missed weight. While Keon Davis won his fight, Nahir Albright defeated Kelvin Davis. In a post-fight interview, Albright stated Kelvin and Keyshawn jumped him backstage.
"Keyshawn and his little brother [Keon Davis] jumped me," Albright said on the ESPN broadcast via Yahoo Sports. "They started walking up to me, all tough, putting his head against mine, and then grabbed me."

After that interaction, Keyshawn was escorted out of the Scope Arena. The Davis brothers, known as “DB3,” will have a lot of explaining to do as Top Rank looks into the partnership with the family.
