Caleb Plant needed a win to secure a fight down the road against Jermall Charlo. The former super middleweight champion was a massive favorite against Armando Resendiz. 

It turns out it's not wise to plan ahead, especially in boxing. 

Resendiz looked like a complete fighter against Plant, beating him via split decision to win the interim WBA super middleweight title. 

When he did land solid punches, Plant (23-3, 14 KOs) wouldn't follow it up with additional shots, looking extremely tentative through the fight. That's where Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) took advantage, landing multiple jabs and power shots.

It seemed like Plant was trying to get loose, though he utilized a sharp jab in the opening rounds. By the fourth, Resendiz was backing Plant up. Unlike Plant, he landed combinations and forced  the American to overuse his energy. Plant's output continued to dip as Resendiz forced him by the ropes. 

By round 10, Resendiz bombarded Plant with shots. The latter was bleeding by the eye, and though he tried to get back into the fight, the final bell sounded.

Per Compubox, Resendiz landed 186 of 600 shots (31%), while Plant landed 109 of 509 (21%). 109 of Resendiz's shots were for power, while 77 were jabs. Plant is now 2-3 in his last fiveio fights.

Resendiz has won two straight, earning his biggest win since beating former unified super welterweight champion Jarrett Hurd in March 2023.

On the eve of the anniversary of Andy Ruiz giving us one of the biggest upsets in boxing history against Anthony Joshua, Resendiz, who also had Ruiz's old cornerman Manny Robles in his corner, got the job done.

It had been over 500 days since Jermall (34-0, 23 KOs) entered a boxing ring before he faced Thomas LaManna (39-6-1). Once on top of the world with his twin brother Jermell, Jermall attempted to conquer a new weight class. While there was some ring rust, "Hit Man" returned in full force with a TKO win.

Charlo dropped LaManna in the third and put him down in the fourth with a left following a replay. Finally, he took him out in the fifth. He looked confident, had his hands down, and smiled through each round. Charlo landed 67 of 210 shots (32%), with 44 of those jabs.

Round 12: Resendiz chased Plant around the ring, landing a body shot. He pressed forward, going upstairs with a right. Plant looked tired as Resendiz would not let up. One of the biggest upsets this year took place in Las Vegas.  The judges had it closer than The Sporting News with two 116-112 verdicts for Resendiz and one, absurdly, 115-113 for Plant.

Round 11: Resendiz provided pressure in the round. He landed a body shot. Plant hit one of his own. Body shot by Plant. Resendiz damaged Plant's eye. He used his jab to his advantage. Plant went to the body.

Round 10: Plant with a right but Resendiz landed a shot of his own. Several jabs connected from Resendiz. A sharp right by Resendiz, followed by a counter right. Resendiz continued his onslaught from the inside. Jabs and hooks connected.

Round 5: Combinations from Plant, who finally picked up the pace. Resendiz with double jabs. Combinations from Plant, and Resendiz returned the favor with a body shot. Resendiz was landing solid shots as Plant tried to find his groove.

Jermall Charlo returns with a bang against Thomas LaManna

Round 6: The fight was called off thanks to a recommendation by the doctor.  

Round 5: A left hand wobbled LaManna. LaManna got sent down for a third time. With his hands down, Charlo landed a counter punch that wowed the crowd. Big body shot from Charlo. Right hand by LaManna.

Round 4: Charlo with a few counter shots as LaManna is forced to back up. Big shot from the inside from Charlo. Multiple jabs connected. LaManna almost went down following a left hook. After replay, it was called a knockdown. Paging Tank Davis.

Round 3: LaManna ate a few jabs and landed a nice right. Both landed shots to the face. Charlo with a right on the inside. A right by Charlo and LaManna went down to the floor. A confident Charlo pressed forward. Big right from Charlo. A counter jab from Charlo.

Round 2: Charlo with jabs to start the round. A punishing jab connected, resulting in some swelling near LaManna's eye. Charlo wasn't missing. A big right by Charlo connected. He connected to the body.

Round 1: Both started with jabs right away. Charlo was pushed by by a hook. Charlo's jab gave him an edge. He landed combinations. While LaManna provided some pressure, Charlo wasn't in a rush.

Yoenli Hernandez hurts Kyrone Davis for decision win

Round 10: Hernandez was calling Davis forward. He wanted to brawl with him. Hernandez landed 101 shots compared to over 40 by Davis by the start of the round. The former landed combinations. Hernandez stared Davis down, taunting him.

Round 9: Hernandez was dancing all over the ring as he entered round nine, a round he never competed in before. A clubbing right connected. Big uppercut by Hernandez. He was being surgical with his shots.

Round 8: There was no resting for Hernandez, who went on the attack right away. On the inside, Hernandez with chopping shots. He landed body shots and overhand rights. By the ropes, Davis got punished.

Round 7: Davis tried landing jabs of his own, but they didn't connect as hard. A lead right followed by an uppercut from Hernandez. Big right by Hernandez, followed by another. Every punch connected pushed Davis back.

Round 6: Hernandez circled the ring and landed multiple jabs. Davis had Hernandez by the ropes, but it didn't stop his hard shots. Rights by Davis, his best shots of the night. Left uppercut from Hernandez. Chopping right by Hernandez. Uppercut by Hernandez.

Round 4: Hernandez continued his assault, landing combinations. Jabs punished Davis. Davis' team was yelling at him to be aggressive. Meanwhile, Hernandez controlled the ring.

Round 3: That was the first time Davis was down since 2016. Hernandez continued to grind, landing several jabs. Hooks and jabs connected. Davis tried high guard but Hernandez went to the body. Big jab by Hernandez hurt Davis. Davis almost got caught by the ropes before the round ended.

Round 2: Hernandez continued to land. Meanwhile, Davis pressed forward. Jabs landed through Davis' guard. Hernandez landed combinations. One combination, including a jab, dropped Davis. The Cuban's power was becoming too much for Davis.

Isaac Lucero takes out Omar Valenzuela in the second round

Round 2: Valenzuela slipped before the end of the first round. He dug to the body in the second and threw wide shots. Lucero was the more accurate of the two. On the inside, Lucero landed uppercuts. Valenzuela with a few rights. Lucero with a right that dropped Valenzuela, the first knockdown of his career. He landed flurries and the referee saw enough. 

Round 1: It had been over 200 days since Lucero has fought. Valenzuela came in hot right away. Eventually, Lucero pressed forward and used jabs. Lucero landed body shots. He connected with overhand rights that pushed Valenzuela back. Combinations by Lucero landed.

10:10 p.m. ET: Caleb Plant vs. Armando Resendiz is up next. Charlo did his part, can Plant? 

9:58 p.m. ET: Manny Pacquiao and Mario Barrios faced off to promote their upcoming fight. 

9:55 p.m. ET: Charlo looked like his old self against LaManna, knocking him down three times before the fight ended following a doctor-recommended stoppage. 

9:20 p.m. ET: The co-main event is up next, as Jermall Charlo moves in weight to face Thomas LaManna. Charlo should win, but will ring rust play a factor? Will there be an upset?

9:13 p.m. ET: Tim Tszyu rematches Sebastian Fundora on July 19. It is the co-main event under Manny Pacquiao vs. Mario Barrios. 

9:10 p.m. ET: An impressive performance from Hernandez, including a knockdown early on, led to a decision win against Davis.

7:45 p.m. ET: Phenom Curmel Moton beat Renny Viamonte via unanimous decision to close the prelims. Moton is now 8-0 in his young career. 

Carl Jammes Martin defeated Francisco Portillo via unanimous decision on the prelims. Meanwhile, Cristian Cangelosi defeated Samuel Figueroa via majority decision. 

The PBC prelims will not be shown on any platform, so fight fans will not be able to see top prospect Curmel Moton in action.
