Who is John Beam? What to know about Laney College AD, coach from 'Last Chance U' who was shot on Oakland campus image

A shooting at Laney College in Oakland, Calif. On Thursday left a popular coach from the Netflix series "Last Chance U" injured.

"A senior member of our athletic staff was shot on campus in the Laney Field House. The individual was immediately transported to a local hospital, and we are keeping them -- and their loved ones -- in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time," Laney College said in a statement.

The individual involved is legendary coach and "Last Chance U" star John Beam, KTVU reported. Beam, who is now Laney College's athletic director, is the only known victim of the shooting.

Here's what you need to know about Beam and his condition after Thursday's shooting.

Who is John Beam?

Beam spent 45 years as a football coach, spending the latter half of his coaching career at Laney College in Oakland. Beam gained national attention when Netflix's "Last Chance U" followed his team for its fifth season, which was released in 2020.

Beam retired from coaching last year at 65 years old but stayed on as Laney College's athletic director.

Initially a high school coach who became widely known in and around the Bay Area, Beam spent time at Skyline High School in Oakland and once told KTVU he considered jumping to the Division I level but didn't want to commit to the long hours and days that would take him away from his family.

Instead, Beam landed at the junior college level and took Laney to new heights, winning a state championship in 2018.

Laney's rise attracted "Last Chance U," a series that follows small programs with athletes hoping to turn their career and even lives around. The season heavily featured Beam, quickly giving him a national profile.

Among the players Beam coached at Laney College was C.J. Anderson, who would transfer to California and win a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos.

'Last Chance U' coach shooting updates

Laney College and local police did not offer many immediate details about the circumstances of the shooting or Beam's condition, but local reports indicate Beam is in critical condition. Beam was shot in the head, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

"From what I understand, it’s critical. It’s tense up there," a former player under Beam told the outlet.

The shooting took place on campus and briefly resulted in a lockdown for the school. The suspect, meanwhile, is still at large after fleeing the scene, police say.
