The Toronto Maple Leafs would've loved to start their season better than this.

They also would've loved not to have the injury news they got Tuesday night for Auston Matthews and Anthony Stolarz.

Both players left Toronto's game on Tuesday night.

Neither would return.

Both were ruled out before the game had ended.

Matthews was listed as out with a lower-body injury.

Stolarz was listed as out with an upper-body injury.

The Maple Leafs entered the night having allowed more goals than any other team in the Eastern Conference.

They were only 8-7-1 because they had also scored a ton, too.

Matthews is obviously a big part of that offensive attack, and if the captain misses time, that's not good.

Stolarz has had a huge role early in the year with Joseph Woll having been away from the team. That's a loss of goalie depth that Toronto definitely wouldn't want to have to deal with.

There likely will be updates soon.

But the initial leaving the game and not returning is already a tough look that foreshadows some negative news afterward until proven otherwise.
