Step aside, Aaron Rodgers, there is a new elder statesman in the NFL.

Rodgers was the NFL's oldest player going into Week 15, with the future Hall of Famer just turning 42 years old.

But that is no longer the case as of Tuesday after the Indianapolis Colts reportedly signed quarterback Philip Rivers out of retirement.

Rivers, who just turned turned 44 on Dec. 8, is two years older than Rodgers, whose birthday was on Dec. 2.

Rivers was drafted by the New York Giants in the 2004 NFL draft before being traded to the then-San Diego Chargers. Rodgers was drafted the following year.

Rodgers has managed to sustain a longer career than Rivers, with the former playing in his 21st season this year while the latter will be entering his 18th.

Rivers has not played in a game since 2020, when he suited up in all 16 games for the Colts, going 11-5 in those contests.

The move to bring Rivers out of retirement comes on the heels of the Colts losing Daniel Jones for the remainder of the season due to a torn Achilles. Indy's playoff chances are also in a precarious spot.

While it remains to be seen what Rivers has left in the tank, the Colts are hoping he still has enough to get them to the postseason.

There is hope Rivers can still be effective, though, as evidenced by Rodgers and fellow 40-plus quarterback Joe Flacco having success this season.
