Giants blockbuster trade idea gives up Kayvon Thibodeaux for RB and draft capital image

Based on reports, the New York Giants don't have interest in trading edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux before the deadline.

The latest report comes from NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, who said on Thursday that while the Giants have received calls the former No. 5 overall pick, they are telling teams no.

However, that didn't stop Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon from pitching a trade that calls for Thibodeaux to go to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for running back Chuba Hubbard and draft capital.

New York Giants: Trade edge Kayvon Thibodeaux to Panthers for RB Chuba Hubbard and draft capital

I understand the Giants may not want  to trade Thibodeaux, but with Brian Burns and Abdul Carter on the roster, a team that is still realistically rebuilding has to be practical. Hubbard could help with the loss of Cam Skattebo to injury but also serve as a potential long-term option, and getting some draft capital as well (while dodging a $14.8 million 2026 contract year) for the disappointing Thibodeaux would make sense.

We know the Panthers would make this deal. After all, Carolina needs to beef up its defense and edge rusher group in particular after losing Patrick Jones to a season-ending injury.

Thibodeaux not only provides a boost in the short term, but he would also offer the Panthers a solution through at least 2026, as the Oregon product still has one more year left on his deal. And, at 24, Thibs could prove to be a long-term solution if he earns a new deal.

On the surface, this trade would make at least a little sense for New York in the sense that the Giants need more draft capital and a running back in the wake of Cam Skattebo's devastating season-ending injury.

Hubbard entered the year as the team's starter, but it appears he's about to take a back seat to Rico Dowdle, which could make Hubbard expendable.

New York is one of the few teams that could withstand the loss of Thibodeaux given their deep EDGE group that includes Brian Burns and Abdul Carter.

The problem is that general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll need to finish this season strong to save their jobs and dealing away one of their better defenders isn't going to help.

New York also doesn't have to be in a rush to trade Thibodeaux, as the team could do so next offseason before he enters the final year of his contract.

It's not totally crazy to think the Giants could trade Thibodeaux, but it's likely going to take a massive offer they can't refuse.
