Things just got a lot more interesting with the Indianapolis Colts.
After losing starting quarterback Daniel Jones for the season due to a torn Achilles' tendon, all hope seemed to be lost for the Colts.
But there is renewed hope on Tuesday after the Colts reportedly signed quarterback Philip Rivers to the practice squad.
Granted, there is no telling what a 44-year-old quarterback who hasn't played since 2020 can still do, but the Colts figure to have a better chance at success than they otherwise would have with Riley Leonard or Brett Rypien under center.
Now, the question is: when will Rivers be ready to play?
Here's what we know about that.
Will Philip Rivers play in Week 15?
This hasn't been decided yet, but there is reason to believe he could play, even with just days to prepare after coming off a five-year stint away from the game.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Colts are going to see how Rivers feels after the team practices on Wednesday and Thursday and will go from there.
Schefter adds that Rivers has experience in this offense, so learning the playbook shouldn't be too difficult a task. The bigger question mark is how Rivers feels physically.
"Before the Colts can determine how soon Philip Rivers can play, they have to see how he feels and practices Wednesday and Thursday. But there is this: Rivers has played in this offense his entire career, so it is expected to be more of a physical question than a mental one," Schefter wrote.
The experience in the Colts' system comes from Rivers playing under head coach Shane Steichen when he was on the Chargers' staff years ago.
In his first stint with the Chargers from 2011-12, Steichen served as a defensive assistant.
In his second stint with the team, Steichen served as the quarterbacks coach from 2016-19, and then as the interim offensive coordinator in 2019. Steichen was the Chargers' full-time offensive coordinator in 2020, but Rivers went to the Colts.
When it comes to how he looks physically, The Athletic's Dianna Russini reports that, per a source, Rivers "looks in better shape now than when he played."
“It’s a no-brainer for who gives them the best chance,” Russini's source added.
If Rivers does play, he's going to have quite the test in a Week 15 matchup against a Seattle Seahawks team that sports an elite defense.
With Rivers reportedly looking good physically and already having experience in the offense, and with the Colts in desperation mode, we would not be shocked if Rivers is on the field for Indy in Week 15.
