The Indianapolis Colts are actually doing it.

Per Adam Schefter, the Colts are signing 44-year-old legendary quarterback Philip Rivers.

"ESPN Sources: 44-year-old Philip Rivers, who has not played in the NFL since the 2020 COVID season, is signing to the QB-needy Indianapolis Colts practice squad," Schefter reports.

Rivers signed a one-day contract with the Los Angeles Chargers this past summer to retire with the team he spent the majority of his career with. Now, he is coming out of retirement to join the Colts, who are in desperate need of quarterback help after Daniel Jones was lost for the season due to a torn Achilles.

On top of Jones going down with injury, Anthony Richardson is also injured with an eye injury, and third-string quarterback Riley Leonard was banged up in the Week 14 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Rivers spent one season with the Colts, helping lead them to a playoff appearance in 2020, where they lost in the wild card round to the Buffalo Bills. He has a long-standing relationship with Colts head coach Shane Steichen, who was on the Chargers' staff from 2014-20 before going to Philadelphia to become the Eagles' offensive coordinator.

Steichen and Rivers found success together from 2016-18, as Rivers was a Pro Bowler in each of those three seasons, throwing 93 touchdowns in that span.

The Colts have been in a freefall. After starting 7-1, they have lost four of their last five games and have gone from the AFC's No. 1 seed to out of the playoff picture altogether. Their schedule doesn't let up for the remainder of the season, as they will head to Seattle in Week 15 to take on the 10-3 Seahawks. They also have games against the San Francisco 49ers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans - all of which are playoff teams heading into Week 15.
