The Chicago Bears traveled to face their fiercest rivals, the Green Bay Packers, this week. In a game where both squads were fighting for the lead in the NFC North, this matchup carried more weight than it typically has between these two teams.
After a very slow first half, the action picked up in the second as both teams went back and forth, finding the endzone. As they entered the fourth quarter, it felt almost inevitable that Caleb Williams would lead the Bears to yet another late comeback win.
Caleb indeed drove the ball all the way down the field with a chance to tie up the game in the closing minute. As he rolled left, he had Cole Kmet wide open streaking towards the back of the endzone, but was just a little late.
The pass ended up being intercepted by Keisean Nixon, and that was that.
When asked about the interception and the loss, Caleb Williams responded like a consummate professional.
Caleb Williams takes full ownership of final drive blunder
Caleb Williams, warranted or not, has received the mantle of being a bit of a diva since entering the league. There have been reports about attitude issues in the past, but when asked by the media about the game sealing play, Williams had this to say.
In those moments, it's you know, a got-to-have-it-moment, and they had a guy trailing me, so, I didn't feel like I could go get it myself. I've just got to give Cole a better shot at it. I think next time, just extend him a little but more and kind of lead him. But in those moments, ou want to put the ball in play and trust your guy or try to have your guy go make a play, and I've just got to give him a better ball.
He's right, it does have to be a better ball. If it is, the Bears score and either go for two to win it or take it into overtime. Either option being better than the result.
One part of that quote is especially impressive. He says "I think next time-". These two teams play each other in two weeks on Sunday Night Football, and if you think Caleb and the Bears aren't going to be ready for that rematch, you're sorely mistaken.
