Virginia Tech’s coaching search has taken a significant turn as of late. James Madison head coach Bob Chesney has reportedly emerging as a serious candidate to replace Brent Pry.
Chesney’s program-building success and regional ties has put him towards the top. Not to mention, his friendly contract structure puts him squarely on the Hokies’ radar as the school accelerates its search towards the end of the season,
According to The Athletic's Bruce Feldman, Virginia Tech “may be shifting” its focus because Chesney is “drawing interest” from the Hokies. The Dukes coach has won at every stop across Division II, FCS and now the Sun Belt.
In just his second season at James Madison, he owns a 17-5 record and has guided the Dukes to an 8-1 start this fall. JMU leads the conference in scoring defense and total defense. His overall head-coaching record of 128-51 includes successful tenures at Holy Cross and Assumption. Needless to say, VT would be a major step in Chesney's career.
The Hokies had initially been linked to former Penn State coach James Franklin, but those conversations have cooled amid Franklin’s reported SEC interest. Chesney, by contrast, offers affordability and stability. His $2.75 million salary and reported $1.25 million buyout would give Virginia Tech far more budget flexibility than a Power Four veteran with a hefty contract.

For an athletic department looking to rebuild quickly without financial strain, those factors matter. So does Chesney’s track record. Four 10-win seasons, no losing years, and a staff known for continuity.
If Virginia Tech chooses to move forward with Chesney, the program would be targeting one of college football’s most efficient builders, and really, that should be their focus after Pry's failed tenure.
