Miami’s Carson Beck owns up to mistakes after overtime setback at SMU image

Carson Beck didn’t deflect blame or look for excuses. After Miami’s overtime loss to SMU, the senior quarterback stood in front of reporters and described a locker room that was “hurting,” one that had let a winnable game slip away because of self-inflicted mistakes.

“It’s tough,” Beck said. “We work really hard, and this team comes and works every single day. We’re so connected…it’s a brotherhood, and it’s really tough to lose like that on the road.”

Beck was sharp early, but a deflected pass that turned into a second-quarter interception shifted the tone, and penalties on both sides of the ball kept the Hurricanes from maintaining rhythm.

For the afternoon, Beck finished 26-of-38 for 274 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, adding 17 yards rushing. Miami out-gained SMU through the air but failed to score on its final three drives.

Asked whether SMU’s defense made adjustments, Beck shook his head. “No, they ran the same thing the whole time,” he said. “We just have to be more disciplined and execute better.”

The final play, an overtime interception on an in-breaking route, sealed the Hurricanes’ fate. “He made a great play,” Beck said. “They had good coverage, and they got us.”

After losing two of their last three games, Miami faces a pivotal stretch to remain in contention for a playoff berth. “We can’t separate,” Beck said. “We have to stay connected, play as a team, stay in unity. Learn from the mistakes and finish each week as hard as we can.”
